Masahito Koshinaka is currently based in Kanagawa Prefecture and is involved in community-based art projects in addition to producing photography, video and VR works. He places “sharing experiences” at the core of his expression, and seeks to use cameras, video, 360-degree cameras, VR equipment, etc., in a way that allows viewers to relive the subject matter and worldview of his works through the perspective of recordability.

He has focused on the relationship between the “collective (group)” and the “individual (person),” and has produced photographic and video works using various materials such as people, flowers, fire, and stars to explore the significance of existence and interaction of “individuals” gathered by chance or necessity within the collective. won the “UBS Young Art Award. Since then, he has participated in international exhibitions in Japan and abroad, including the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial (Niigata) and the WRO Media Art Biennial (Poland), expanding the scope of his activities.

In recent years, he has been strongly interested in the phenomenon in which a single viewpoint or judgment formed through social networking and media, irrespective of the actual facts, becomes entrenched in society as if it were the objective truth. In this age of dramatic increase in the amount of information, I have doubts about the fact that the viewpoints and perceptions of individuals, which are supposed to be diverse in nature, are overlooked, and in particular, I am pursuing expressions that raise questions about the situation in which thoughts, words, and actions flow in the same direction at an accelerated pace with vague grounds in the group mind.
